Magnesium and Potassium: never without!

Diet advice
Magnesio e Potassio: mai senza!
The importance of vitamins and mineral salts has been eviscerated not only on this site but in general by studies and research all over the world. Today we face the need that the body has to obtain the right dose of two essential minerals for survival on a daily basis: the magnesium (chemical symbol Mg) and potassium (chemical symbol K).

Properties and benefits

We often hear them mentioned in advertisements in the face of the great summer heat, but perhaps not everyone knows that even in the cold, our body needs a large amount of these substances. They are the two minerals that are most abundant within our cells, and go hand in hand in importance and function. In fact, potassium can only pass through the cells through the ION PUMP, i.e. a delicate mechanism that is supported by magnesium. The latter regulates the production of cellular energy, as well as the metabolism of potassium, calcium, zinc, vitamin C and other substances within the body. Specifically, here are the activities that the magnesium takes place within our body:
  • It reduces blood pressure by dilating blood vessels
  • Reduces sleep disturbances and fatigue in general
  • Stimulates circulation providing valid support to the heart
  • Relieve stress
  • It acts on muscle contractility
  • Being a coenzyme of at least 300 enzymes, it has a fundamental role in regulating the internal pH (acidity - basicity)
For its part, the potassium it is no less. In fact it is also called the mineral of the heart, because it protects the heart system. Here are some of the known benefits of this mineral:
  • Reduces blood pressure
  • Regulate your heart rate
  • Improve mood
  • Reduces the formation of thrombi and plaques
  • Regulates energy production
  • According to some studies, it decreases the possibility of developing kidney stones

Therapeutic indications, contraindications and overdose

A healthy and balanced diet should in itself contribute the necessary dose of magnesium and potassium for the correct functioning of all vital and non-vital organs. But excessive sweating, a restrictive diet, particularly intense sporting activity are all situations that could require integration of these minerals, in the form of both regenerating drinks and herbal teas or pills. However, it is also necessary to know the side effects. Magnesium, for example, is not recommended in the case of renal insufficiency, while potassium in cases of mineral retention, liver insufficiency and constipation. An overdose of magnesium can cause nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain and mental confusion. A supplement composed only of magnesium could reduce the concentration of potassium and sodium in the body. An excess of potassium could lead to even dangerous arrhythmias and muscle weakness. For those who want to know more about the ION PUMP: It is an ion transport system through channels formed by membranes that allow elements such as potassium to enter and leave the cells. Each membrane, in fact, has a specific permeability and the difference in concentration between cations and anions of the intra and extra cellular environments form what is called membrane potential, or action potential.   Source:
